MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A measure under consideration by Vermont lawmakers seeks to limit the amount of salt used on roads in the Green Mountain State in order to reduce the environmental damage it can cause.

House Bill 86 would set up a volunteer program for commercial and municipal plow drivers to help reduce the amount of salt used. It would include best practices and information on salt alternatives.

“We really need to address chloride in our surface waters. The Agency of Natural Resources has been testing for chloride over time and actually seeing an impact on aquatic life,” said Rep Amy Sheldon/D-Middlebury, the bill’s sponsor.

VTrans has already been using best management practices for a number of years.
