‘Wings of Fire’ Soars With New Update Three Years After Netflix Cancellation
May 7, 2025
It’s been almost exactly three years since the reported Wings of Fire series that was in the works was canceled at Netflix, and now the show has roared back to life with a new update. Ava DuVernay was originally attached to work on a Wings of Fire animated series at Warner Bros. in 2020, and it wasn’t until a year later that the project landed at Netflix before being canned the year after. Now, Variety reports that the show has once again been revived at Amazon, and it has also set Aaron Watke as its showrunner. Watke is best known for his work as a writer on Star Trek: Prodigy, and he’s also worked on other projects such as Wizards, Teen Titans Go!, and Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia.
It’s also been reported that Tui T. Sutherland, who wrote the Wings of Fire books on which the series is based, will co-write the project with Watke and serve as an executive producer. Marc Resteghini has also been tapped to produce the series. Other details about the show, including potential directors and voice cast members, are unknown at this time. Amazon has also not yet made any information available about when the show plans to begin production or when it will be released. Things for Wings of Fire are still in very early stages, but it’s still refreshing for fans of the book to know that it’s found a home and is heading in the right direction after years of turmoil. When the series is ready to be released, it will stream on Prime Video with other Amazon productions.
There are 29 books in the Wings of Fire series so far, including 21 novels and eight graphic novels, with new installments being released every year since the series began in 2012. There are multiple major plots in the Wings of Fire series, but it primarily follows dragons such as Starlight, Tsunami, and Glory attempting to avoid prophecies and save the world. The series has reportedly also sold over 27 million copies since dropping its first book, and it has spent over 200 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Several audiobook versions of the novels are available from narrator Shannon McManus.
The Wings of Fire series in the works at Amazon does not have an official release window. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the project.
