The Glencoe City Council passed several measures Monday evening, including the final adoption of its emergency cannabis ordinance and updates on community projects such as Glencoe Days and the city’s new dog park.
Cannabis ordinance finalized
Council members finalized Ordinance Number 626, allowing for one license to be issued for a retail cannabis establishment within the city.
The decision came on the recommendation of the city attorney, who noted that state-level expansion of retail cannabis sales is anticipated this summer. The ordinance positions Glencoe to be in compliance and prepared for the shift in state law.
Glencoe Days carnival in jeopardy
Glencoe Days may be missing a key attraction this year: the carnival. The previous vendor has gone out of business, leaving organizers scrambling to find a replacement.
In related news, the Glencoe Days parade route will be adjusted this year to accommodate ongoing roadwork along Hennepin Avenue.
Fence approved for Pro Auto property
Pro Auto received city approval to erect a fence along Queen Avenue, a vacated roadway where the City of Glencoe owns the easement. The move comes after concerns of unwanted traffic cutting through the area. While overhead power lines exist, no underground utilities are present, allowing the project to move forward. Pro Auto will take on liability for the fence.
Cemetery committee may be dissolved
A first reading of Ordinance Number 628 was approved, which would dissolve the city’s cemetery committee and transfer its responsibilities to the park board. The council will vote on final approval at a future meeting.
EDA to guide housing study
The city’s Economic Development Authority (EDA) has been designated to serve as the steering committee for Glencoe’s upcoming housing study.
Dog park nearing completion
Glencoe’s new dog park is taking shape thanks to a combination of city support, donations, and community involvement.
Century Fence has already set the fence posts, and Rice Builders will pour the concrete slab and sidewalks at no cost to the city. Water lines have been installed for a hydration station, and JIT Companies will donate decorative dog silhouettes for the fencing.
The Rotary Club has successfully raised all the required funding, with benches soon to be added. A shelter house may be built and assembled by Glencoe-Silver Lake industrial arts students.
A formal opening and dedication for the park is scheduled for June.
Pickleball courts still in planning stage
While momentum builds for Glencoe’s new pickleball courts, no completion date is yet confirmed. The committee continues to evaluate surfacing materials and how they interact with fencing. Officials are weighing long-term maintenance and cost-efficiency against potential revenue for the city.
Airport project moves ahead
Work is also progressing at the Glencoe Municipal Airport. Fencing for the Airport Pavement Project has been completed, with slurry sealing and seal coating scheduled to begin Monday, June 2. The contractor will have 45 days to finish the paving. Temporary airport closures are expected during that time.
The next Glencoe City Council meeting will continue to address seasonal projects and final votes on pending ordinances.
