Amazon warehouse to come to Manhattan

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – An Amazon warehouse is coming to Manhattan, Kan.
The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce shared a newsletter on their website on Tuesday, May 20, stating Amazon has entered into an agreement to purchase 15.26 acres at the Manhattan Business Park to construct a new 70,000-square-foot warehouse. The facility will serve a broader region around Manhattan for “last mile” delivery services.
The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce said the agreement must be approved by the Manhattan City Commission. It is on their agenda for consideration on Wednesday, May 21.
Chamber officials said they have been engaged with Amazon for over five years looking for a solution before the company settled on the business park. While the company has not released employment information, there are no incentive agreements being proposed to complete the project. The company will pay the full listed price of the property and will have three years to begin construction, or the city can purchase the property back at the same price. Any new building will go on the tax rolls at full assessed value and the company will pay all state and local taxes.
Chamber officials indicated they will send a letter of support for the agreement and look forward to answering any questions that might arise at the commission meeting.
Officials said this is a great win for the long-term economic health of the community and is the second major attraction win for Manhattan in the last two months after PTMW announced it would be occupying Building K at 1105 Kretschmer Dr. and bringing 146 new jobs.
