Some GOP Senators work to save renewable energy credits—not Sen. James Lankford
June 4, 2025
Oklahoma U.S. Sen. James Lankford is among those who opposes the Biden administration tax credits given renewable industry. But he finds his stance under growing criticism and resistance from some other Republican Senators as they deal with the megabill sent to the Senate from the House.
Lankford has been a critic of the government’s incentivizing or subsidizing “intermittent” power like wind and solar compared to what he says is “baseload” power such as nuclear and gas.
“Our country needs more and more base power,” Lankford said this week. “We also need fewer and fewer credits and allow companies to be able to grow. Of wind energy, specifically, he said, “It’s not nascent anymore. It can function. I’m not opposed to wind power. We have a lot of it in our state.”
However, some Senate Republicans want to save the renewable energy tax credits, such as Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana. According to E&E News, North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven wants geothermal credits to be exempted from removal. Another Senator, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia has been talking of bringing back incentives for hydrogen.
