KDE Plasma 6.4 Desktop Environment Officially Released, This Is What’s New
June 17, 2025
The KDE Project released today KDE Plasma 6.4 as a major update with exciting new features and enhancements for all fans of the KDE Plasma desktop environment.
KDE Plasma 6.4 introduces a major UI revamp for the Spectacle screenshot utility, support for per-virtual-desktop custom tile layouts, the KWin-X11 easy-to-use and flexible X window manager, a new HDR calibration wizard, and the Aurorae theme engine for KWin window decorations.
To help more apps better integrate with the Plasma Wayland session, KDE Plasma 6.4 introduces support for several Wayland protocols, including the “Relative tablet dials”, “idle notify“, “color representation”, “FIFO”, “toplevel tag”, and “single pixel buffer”.
It also features support for controlling whether a window has a titlebar and frame from its Task Manager context menu, support for fully disabling system tray icons from apps that lack an internal setting for this preference, and support for applying sound themes with a double-click.
On top of that, the new KDE Plasma release improves KRunner search result ordering and adds support for various types of color codes, revamps the portal-based shortcut chooser window, and introduces the ability to start an update in the Plasma Discover package manager directly from the notification.
Among other noteworthy changes, KDE Plasma 6.4 adds support for sending persistent notifications to the notification history, adds support for customizing the duration of the “Fade Desktop” virtual desktop switching effect, and revamps the KDE Menu Editor (KMenuEdit) app.
Last but not least, KDE Plasma 6.4 adds a new “Background Services” item to the Applications page in the Plasma System Monitor app for grouping background services and adds support for highlighting newly-installed apps in the Kickoff application launcher.
It also adds the ability to configure the system so that dragging and dropping files and folders to another location on the same disk automatically moves them, rather than asking every time, as well as support for the P010 video color format and Extended Dynamic Range support. Check out the release announcement for more details.
KDE Plasma 6.4 will soon arrive in the stable software repositories of various popular GNU/Linux distributions, including openSUSE Tumbleweed, Arch Linux, Fedora Linux, KDE neon, and others, so check out for an update in the coming days if you want to enjoy all the new features and enhancements.
