It’s the wedding of the year — and she’s the bride. Lauren Sánchez, a former journalist, is set to marry Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in a wedding ceremony in Venice, Italy, this week. The nuptials, which have sparked protests from groups unhappy with what they see as a blatant display of income inequality in the floating city, have also brought guests like Kim Kardashian and Tom Brady — many of whom count Sánchez as a personal friend.

But who is Sánchez, and when did she become the next Mrs. Jeff Bezos? Let’s dive in.

Born in New Mexico and raised in California

Sánchez, who is a third-generation Mexican American, was born in New Mexico in 1969. According to CNN, she attended El Camino College in California before transferring to the University of Southern California, where she studied communications.

Sánchez initially struggled in college due to her then undiagnosed dyslexia. In a 2024 Instagram post, she shared that a professor “changed the trajectory” of her life by getting her tested for it. “Nothing was the same after that — I learned how to learn — and I’m forever grateful,” she wrote in honor of World Book Day.

After her diagnosis, Sánchez told Elle, she “went from barely getting Cs in a community college, to earning a 3.8 GPA, to then going to the University of Southern California and becoming a journalist.”

She’s worked in journalism — and helicopters

Sánchez began her broadcasting career as a desk assistant at KCOP-TV in Los Angeles, per USA Today, before moving on to her first on-air reporting job at KTVK-TV in Phoenix. She later worked as a reporter for Extra and held several roles at Fox Sports Net.

In 1999, she auditioned for a spot on The View. In a January 2023 interview with WSJ Magazine, Sánchez said that learning she had not gotten a spot on the talk show (the role went to Lisa Ling) was “one of the most devastating days” of her life.

She went on to cohost Good Day L.A. in 2003, and had a stint as the host of the first season of So You Think You Can Dance in 2005, before taking a step back from hosting to focus on her family.

In 2014, she shifted to producing, cofounding Pursuit Productions with Dan Friedkin and developing projects like a World War II documentary about the Battle of Tarawa.

Sánchez made another major pivot in 2016, when she founded Black Ops Aviation, an aerial film and production company. Sánchez, who became a licensed pilot (following in the footsteps of her father, a flight instructor), worked with directors like Christopher Nolan and Catherine Hardwicke, per the Hollywood Reporter.

“I had my job, I had a career, and then I found a calling,” she told THR in 2017. “I loved entertainment and I loved filming, and so I got to combine all of it.”

Her passion for flying also inspired her to write a children’s book called The Fly Who Flew to Space. It was published in English and Spanish in 2024.

In an interview with Today in 2024, she shared, “I never thought at 54 — I’m going to be 55 — that I’d be an author, that I’d be getting married. I mean, life is just beginning.”

Sánchez has also turned her attention toward philanthropic causes, working with organizations like This Is About Humanity, which supports separated and reunified families at the U.S.-Mexico border.

She’s been married before

Prior to going public with her relationship with Bezos in 2019, Sánchez was in two high-profile relationships.

In the early 2000s, Sánchez dated NFL star Tony Gonzalez. The two never married, and share a son, Nikko, born in 2001. Sánchez and Gonzalez are on very good terms after their split — his wife, October Gonzalez, even attended Sánchez’s bachelorette trip to Paris in May.

“Tony and his wife [October “Tobie” Gonzalez] are my best friends,” she told WSJ Magazine in 2023. “It wasn’t always that way. There was friction [at the beginning]. But Tony and Tobie were at Thanksgiving with us [this year], and we’re really good friends.”

In 2005, Sánchez married Patrick Whitesell, the executive chairman of media and entertainment agency Endeavor. The former couple share children Evan, 19, and Ella, 17. Though Sánchez and Whitesell did not officially divorce until 2019, People reported that the two had been “on and off” for some time and separated when she and Bezos began seeing one another.

How she met Bezos

It was Whitesell who reportedly introduced Sánchez to Bezos during the premiere of the film Manchester by the Sea in 2016, though Sánchez and Bezos did not reconnect again until 2018, when the Amazon founder hired Black Ops Aviation to work on a film about his space company Blue Origin.

In a 2023 interview with Vogue, Sánchez said she was “looking forward to being Mrs. Bezos,” confirming she would take her soon-to-be husband’s last name. And the following year she told Extra that Bezos was “amazing.”

“I get to spend the rest of my life with him and he loves my kids,” she gushed. “And that is really what I am looking forward to.”
