WALDORF, Md. —A Waldorf man is facing armed robbery charges after police said he brandished a handgun and attempted to steal cannabis from another individual during a drug transaction at Waldorf Market Place. Taisian Marquet Owens, 28, was arrested following a police pursuit and is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center, according to court records.

Charging documents state the incident occurred Sept. 11 around 5 p.m. when a victim approached Owens to purchase cannabis. Court records say Owens opened the door of his gold Buick while the victim stood nearby.

Police reports state Owens noticed the victim had cannabis in his hoodie and allegedly grabbed his arm while trying to take it. The victim reported seeing a black handgun between the seat and center console. Charging documents allege Owens said, “I’m going to get all that,” before the victim broke free and ran.

Charles County Sheriff’s Deputy V. Colantonio reported being parked at 3033 Waldorf Market Place when the victim ran toward his patrol vehicle in a panic, appearing scared and out of breath. Colantonio wrote that he then saw a gold Buick approach with Owens yelling out of the car window before speeding away.

Patrol units later found the Buick at a convenience store on Smallwood Drive. As Owns was attempting to leave the parking lot, officers stopped the vehicle and placed him in custody. Court records say Owens became disorderly after his arrest, yelling and cursing before striking his head against the cruiser window during transport to the detention center.

Owens faces a felony count of armed robbery under Maryland Criminal Law Section 3-403, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison under Maryland law. He also faces a misdemeanor count of attempted theft of property valued between $100 and $1,500, which carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in jail and a $500 fine.

Judge Patrick J. Devine ordered Owens held without bond during his bail review hearing on Sept. 12, court records show. Owens initially waived his right to an attorney but was later deemed eligible for a public defender. The Charles County Public Defender’s Office has entered an appearance on his behalf.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 10 in Charles County District Court. Defense counsel has filed motions requesting a speedy trial and demanding discovery. The State’s Attorney’s Office for Charles County is prosecuting the case.

All proceedings are scheduled to take place in Charles County District Court in La Plata.
