Authorities responding to reported active shooter incident at the Southport Yacht Basin

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) -Three people are dead and six others are injured after a shooting at the American Fish Company in Southport.

The Southport spokesperson stated that three people were killed when someone opened fire on patrons at the waterfront bar from their boat at the Southport Yacht Basin on Saturday, Sept. 27, around 9:30 p.m.

Original reports from city officials said eight people were injured. However, Southport Police Chief Todd Coring shared during a press conference around 1 a.m. on Sunday that six people were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Chief Coring also stated that there are currently two active scenes, one in Southport and one in Oak Island.

The spokesperson said that the suspect was seen heading toward Oak Island and the Intracoastal Waterway.

According to the spokesperson, a person of interest is being questioned.

The current conditions of the six other people who were injured are unknown.

Chief Coring said the names of the victims will not be released until families are notified.
