Meta Launches ‘Waterworth,’ World’s Longest Subsea

October 6, 2025

Meta has announced Project Waterworth, its most ambitious subsea infrastructure initiative yet, designed to power the next generation of global connectivity and AI innovation. Spanning over 50,000 km — longer than Earth’s circumference — the project will connect five major continents and stands as the world’s longest and highest-capacity subsea cable system once completed.

Waterworth will link the U.S., India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions, strengthening global digital networks and driving economic cooperation and digital inclusion. In India, the project will accelerate the country’s digital transformation and reinforce its growing role in the global AI and data economy.

Subsea cables like Waterworth form the backbone of the internet, carrying over 95% of intercontinental data traffic. This multi-billion-dollar, multi-year investment will establish three new oceanic corridors, delivering the speed, resilience, and scale required for AI-driven applications.

Building on a decade of innovation across more than 20 subsea cable projects, Meta is now deploying 24-fiber-pair systems—the industry’s highest standard—to achieve unmatched connectivity and capacity. Waterworth’s design incorporates advanced routing and burial techniques, ensuring durability even at ocean depths of 7,000 meters.

As AI transforms industries globally, Project Waterworth will underpin the infrastructure essential to this transformation—ensuring that the benefits of AI and digital progress reach people everywhere.
