Facebookfounder and Meta CEOMark Zuckerberghas announced that the company is adding Hindi and Portuguese language support to its AI-powered translation feature for Reels onInstagramand Facebook, expanding beyond the initial English and Spanish offerings introduced in August.Zuckerberg made an announcement in a series of video clips.“Big news for Reels: we’re launching translations using Meta AI in more languages. It’s available for Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish and English now and we’re working on adding more soon. Check it out!” he said in one of the videos.The feature, which uses Meta AI to automatically translate, dub, and lip-sync video content, now supports four languages with additional language options planned for future release, he said.
How the Meta AI translation in Reels works
According to the company, Meta AI mimics the creator’s original voice tone and sound to produce translated audio that maintains authenticity across languages. The system also offers an optional lip-syncing feature that matches translated audio to the speaker’s mouth movements, creating a more natural viewing experience.Meta also said that the technology has been in development since Meta’s initial announcement in 2024, with the company citing creator feedback as instrumental in shaping the feature’s capabilities.
Meta AI translation in Reels availability
The translation service is available free of charge to Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and all public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is accessible. Creators can enable the feature to automatically translate their content for international audiences.Meanwhile, viewers maintain control over their language preferences through built-in settings. All translated content will display a “Translated with Meta AI” label, and users can disable translations or revert to original audio through the three-dot settings menu under audio and language options.
