New Mexicans frustrated with Amazon Web Services outage

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Amazon Web Services, a cloud hosting service, went down early Monday morning, causing hundreds of websites and apps to go offline.

Among the millions of people impacted, a local restaurant had to turn back the hands of time to get the job done.

“I got here at our store and noticed our system was down so we had to do plan b,” said Joszhimara Hernandez, general manager for Garcia’s Kitchen.

Plan B meant it was back to pen and paper for employees at Garcia’s Kitchen in Albuquerque.

Hernandez says because of the Amazon Web Services outage, they could not use their iPads to take orders, and they could not let people pay with debit or credit cards.

“We were letting them know that we were only accepting cash at the moment, you know,” said Hernandez.

He says that didn’t stop people waiting to get a bite of their breakfast burritos.

“Some people would leave and then come back, we were noticing people were coming back with cash in hand,” Hernandez said.

Dominic Velasquez says they had similar issues at Outpost 1706 in Old Town,

“It’s just kind of like changing the like, way I kind of can navigate work, you know, versus, like, taking a bunch of orders at once and being able to, like, kind of memorize it and, like, start taps and stuff. I’ve been having to close people out, or mainly just take charges from specific devices,” said Velasquez.

For Corey Azure, something as simple as booking a hotel turned into a 45-minute frustration.

“Every time I backed out or anything, it would knock me out of the website. So it was taking me, it took me hours to get to where I needed to get,” said Azure.

Officials with Amazon Web Services say the problems were resolved this Monday evening. They also say this was an internal connection issue – and it was not because of an outside party, like hackers.

The outage also impacted several airlines, and led to delays at airports across the country, including the Sunport.
