Omaha Tribe to hold first meeting of its Cannabis Commission
October 21, 2025
The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska has announced plans to hold the first meeting of its new Cannabis Commission.
The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. Central time Monday at the tribal headquarters building in Macy and is open to the public.
The tribe said it plans to swear in members of its five-person commission, appoint officers, and review and possibly approve regulations for the sale of recreational and medical marijuana, which it legalized in July.
“While Nebraska’s process lurches from delay to debate, we’re doing the one thing patients and businesses need – governing,” John Cartier, the tribe’s attorney general, said in a statement. “On Oct. 27, we give Nebraska a green light: clear rules, real oversight, and a workable, well-regulated industry rooted in sovereignty, safety, and common sense.”
Cartier was referring to Nebraska’s medical marijuana industry, which has been slow to get off the ground after voters approved it in November 2024. The state’s Medical Cannabis Commission has met several times this year but has yet to finalize regulations, and its proposed regulations have been widely criticized as being too restrictive and not reflective of the will of the voters.
Earlier this month, the Omaha Tribe said it hopes to open its first dispensary early next year.
