This COP30 official side event session, organised by GINGR, the Global Initiative for Nature, Grids and Renewables, explores how shared, science-based ocean metrics can help governments, industry, and financiers align offshore renewables with Nature- and People-Positive outcomes for climate, biodiversity, and communities.

Background and Rationale

Offshore wind and electricity grids are central to advancing the global energy transition, offering significant opportunities to accelerate decarbonisation while supporting both nature and people. As the world responds to growing climate challenges, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP30 serves as a pivotal platform for progressing solutions that integrate climate action, resilience, and just energy transitions.

Offshore wind and electricity grids are critical to achieving the COP commitment to triple global renewable energy capacity. However, their development must prioritize the protection of marine biodiversity and the well-being of coastal communities. At COP30, GINGR will unveil its initial findings, including a draft global framework for ocean metrics designed to guide governments, industry leaders, and financiers in deploying offshore renewables that are both Nature- and People-Positive.

The GINGR event directly supports and contributes to the key themes of COP30 by enabling significant emissions reductions through the scaling of ocean renewables, enhancing energy system resilience with diversified renewable sources and robust grid integration, and supporting a just and inclusive shift to clean energy—especially for coastal and island communities. Additionally, the event showcases innovative frameworks and metrics designed to inform policy and investment, aligning with COP30’s focus on climate action, resilience, energy transition, and innovation.

Objectives and Targets

This session will showcase how integrated ocean–climate solutions—including offshore wind, resilient electricity grids, marine biodiversity monitoring, and nature-based approaches—can drive decarbonization while simultaneously restoring ecosystems and enhancing community resilience. By sharing pioneering practices and standardized metrics, the event encourages participants to engage with GINGR’s draft framework and collaborate on shaping a just energy transition. Together, we can harness the full potential of our oceans to achieve climate and biodiversity objectives. We invite our speakers to discuss potential next steps in this vital journey.

This GINGR event aims to:

  • Present the latest version of the GINGR metric framework and gather feedback
  • Facilitate dialogue on best practices and challenges in biodiversity monitoring in ocean renewable development
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration among policy makers, renewable developers, regulators, and financial institutions
  • Promote uptake of the framework in policy, planning, and investment decisions

The event targets a diverse audience, including government representatives, technical experts, producers, transmission operators, civil society, and investors, to maximise impact and foster cross-sectoral partnerships.

Agenda and speakers to be shared soon.
