In Tamil Nadu, palm trees — once abundant and vital to local life — are declining due to urbanization, logging and climate change. Former teacher Prathee Jeen, known as the Palm Princess, founded the nonprofit organization TAN Palm Foundation in Tamil Nadu to protect them. She raises awareness through school campaigns, tree-planting festivals and social media, stressing the role of palms in preventing coastal erosion and boosting groundwater. With her colleague Angel Felix, she promotes palm-based crafts, providing income for artisans and small businesses. Jeen also advocates for greater state support and market recognition for palm products such as ice apples and palm nectar, ensuring that these iconic trees — and the communities they sustain — thrive again.
