DULUTH — Upon entering the second-floor classroom at Duluth Denfeld High School, science teacher Alison Wood’s setup may look a little unexpected.

This week, students in the natural resources class are wrapping up their unit on soil erosion with “stream tables,” creating miniature landscapes — complete with Lego houses — and exploring how the ground changes when a moving water source is introduced. In this case, beakers filled from the classroom sink and poured into the raised tubs of sand and rock.

“There’s a whole opportunity to approach education with playfulness, while keeping with the idea of effective learning,” said Wood. “You can get students outside, you can get them up from their desks and actually interact with what they’re learning instead of just reading about it, making observations, asking questions, and you can get kids to care.”

The agriculture, food and natural resources class is one of several courses that Wood teaches at Denfeld, along with a biology and a class on plant sciences. An educator for over 30 years, Wood has a longtime passion for environmental education, something made evident to anyone who has had her as a teacher.
