RED HOOK, N.Y. — A village smoke shop has been shut down after allegedly illegally selling cannabis products, Red Hook police said Wednesday.

In a press release, the Red Hook Police Department said Red Hook Exotics, located at 7484 South Broadway, was shut down Wednesday, Nov. 12, by the state Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) Enforcement Team.

The release said Red Hook police assisted investigators with the inspection conducted at the smoke shop. Police said the inspection stemmed from “numerous complaints of unlawful sales of cannabis at the location as well as a report of subjects becoming ill after smoking illicit cannabis purchased at the store.”

The ensuing inspection led to the discovery of illegal cannabis flower, edibles, and concentrate, police said, with products seized including untested products not from New York state. Police said one brand of edible packages contained 5000 milligrams of THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis.

It is illegal to sell cannabis products in New York state that have not been grown, manufactured, and tested in the state.

Police said Red Hook Exotics was issued a violation notice and sealed. On Sunday, Nov. 16, during a Freeman visit to the smoke shop, it remained closed, with two notices posted on both the door and the window referencing the violation.

“OCM’s Enforcement Team is working across the state to make sure the law is followed and that only licensed businesses are allowed to sell cannabis products,” said Daniel Haughney, director of enforcement and investigations at the state Office of Cannabis Management in a statement. “This ensures that the public is buying safer, tested products that meet New York State standards. The inspection in Red Hook led to an order to seal an unlicensed location — a clear reminder that illegal activity will not be tolerated in New York.”

Red Hook Exotics could not be immediately reached for comment on Sunday.
