Wilfried Nancy lands ominous Celtic guarantee with ‘pressured environment’ already closing

November 18, 2025

Wilfried Nancy has already proved to be a winner with silverware at each staging post in his managerial career.

But Charlie Mulgrew has warned the pressure to keep it up at Celtic will be unlike anything he’s ever experienced.

Parkhead power brokers moved to make Nancy their top target after Brendan Rodgers ’ hasty in-season departure.

CF Montreal and now Columbus Crew have seen what the 48-year-old can do when handed the reins.

However, the everyday demands of keeping the Hoops top of the pile in Scotland is a pressure cooker on another level.

The former Scotland defender knows it will be an eye-opener and far more demanding and different from the more laid-back ways Nancy is used to across the Atlantic.

And Mulgrew said: “It is a completely different level at Celtic.

“He is now coming to a pressured environment, where he will never have witnessed that intensity. I can guarantee that.

“You never know what that is going to be like until you are actually in the job.

“It is something that he will have to learn how to handle because everyone in Scotland knows the demands that come with being the Celtic manager.”

The former Scotland defender does believe Nancy could be the perfect fit for his old club because he plays the Celtic way.

The Hoops are looking to finalise a deal for the Columbus Crew boss and his backroom team.

Mulgrew has delved closely into what the Scottish champions will be getting with their incoming boss and he reckons there is plenty to get excited about.

The former defender said: “I didn’t know anything about him when he was linked at first. I then went away and did a bit of homework on him.

“He looks to be a good manager. He talks very well and is big on how he likes to treat and manage people, which is very important in the modern day.

“The formation that he seems to prefer is a 3-4-3 and he likes his teams to attack and score goals.

“It’s important to play good, exciting, front-foot football at Celtic. It looks to be a very attacking style and at times his teams have been caught on the counter-attack. Celtic fans will want attacking football because that is the Celtic way.

“Hopefully he brings a brand of football that is different, exciting and forward-thinking.

“I want to see his team play forward passes with the ball that gets the fans off their seats.

“Whether he would stick with that formation and style or changes that, time will tell. It is something different and it is exciting times.”

Nancy has had a successful coaching career to date. He had one season at CF Montreal before he moved to Crew three years ago.

The 48-year-old won the Canadian Championship and then Major League Soccer Cup and Leagues Cup success at Columbus. He is also the MLS coach of the year.

Mulgrew reckons there could be similarities to when Celtic appointed Ange Postecoglou.

The 39-year-old said: “He has done well in his managerial career so far.

“Yes, it hasn’t been at the level of Celtic but he will have wanted to make the step up eventually.

“Here’s hoping he can be as successful here. It is exciting and an appointment that should bring excitement to the club and the fans.

“I want to see what he brings to the Scottish game. It will be something completely different.

“It looks like it could be similar to when Postecoglou came over. He was unknown and look at the success he had at Celtic.”

Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have both stepped in to fill the void after Rodgers’ premature departure.

Mulgrew believes the pair need to take enormous credit for the way they have come in and given the club some much-needed stability.

They are likely to be taking the team again, or certainly the preparations, for this weekend’s clash with St Mirren, which is also a dress rehearsal for next month’s Premier Sports Cup Final.

The former Kelty Hearts boss said: “If Martin O’Neill had taken the team to the end of the season, then I don’t think that there would have been too many complaints.

“He has done brilliantly. He has managed the ship very well. Something had to be done on a more permanent arrangement.

“Even if they had said to Martin to remain until the end of the season, it would have given us some form of stability.

“But my preference was always a long-term solution.

“Now something is happening and moving forward and it should be the start of an exciting time for Celtic.”

Maloney had stepped up from his position as the club’s professional player pathway manager to take the first-team role. Mulgrew has been impressed with the job his former team-mate has done.

He also has previous managerial experience at Wigan and Hibs, while he worked under Roberto Martinez with the Belgium national team.

Mulgrew hopes Nancy may see the value of his local knowledge and keep him on the Celtic first-team coaching front.

He added: “Shaun is a great coach. He has great ideas in the game and has shown that in his time there with Martin.

“He has a lot to offer. I don’t know if he will remain part of the new manager’s plans.

“The new man might have his own team and own ideas. He might inherit the likes of Shaun, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus, who can all add something if they were to remain in post.”
