Washington state governments potentially overpaying for supplies on Amazon
December 5, 2025
WASHINGTON – A new report suggests that government agencies in Washington state may be overpaying for routine supplies purchased through Amazon.
The ‘Institute for Local Self-Reliance‘ analyzed purchasing data from more than 250 agencies nationwide. The study found that Washington spent more on Amazon than any other state included in the research.
The Department of Social and Health Services spent $3.8 million in 2023 alone.
Researchers highlighted that Amazon’s dynamic pricing often led schools, cities and counties to pay varying amounts for identical items. In some cases, the prices were double or even triple.
The report also warned about the potential negative impact on local suppliers due to heavy reliance on Amazon.
Amazon disputed the findings, claiming its platform saves governments money and provides agencies with tools to control spending.
