“Ohioans for Cannabis Choice” pushes back against new marijuana restrictions

January 3, 2026

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — Changes to Ohio laws regulating recreational marijuana and intoxicating hemp products are set to take effect in mid-March.

However, a group called Ohioans for Cannabis Choice is working to place a measure on the November 2026 ballot that would repeal portions of Senate Bill 56, which Gov. Mike DeWine signed into law just before Christmas.

Under the new law, intoxicating hemp products, including beverages, could only be sold at licensed marijuana dispensaries. The legislation also reduces the number of marijuana plants allowed to be grown in a household from 12 to six.

Additionally, marijuana and cannabis products that are legally purchased in another state would become illegal to possess in Ohio.

Ohioans for Cannabis Choice must collect at least 200,000 signatures from registered Ohio voters in order to place the repeal measure on the ballot.

Ohio voters approved the legalization of recreational marijuana in 2023, with 57% voting in favor and 43% opposed.
