Amazon plans mini-fulfillment center on Main

Amazon has submitted a zoning analysis request to the City of Evanston seeking to renovate a 9,000 square foot building at 2308 Main St. into a “mini-fulfillment center” for its gig-economy service, Amazon Flex.
The request submitted last week remains under review by the city. The single-story building formerly housed an Advanced Auto Parts store.
Drivers for the Amazon Flex service would use their personal vehicles to pick up packages at the center for delivery.
The zoning analysis request says the structure would have a “small front-of-house area” where customer orders are held for drivers to pick up.
Amazon Flex, a gig-economy service, was launched in 2015 and allows independent contractors to pick up shifts and deliver packages in their personal cars, similar to popular food delivery services, DoorDash and Uber Eats.
The warehouse on Main Street, according to the zoning analysis, would be staffed by Amazon employees completing the transactions for drivers picking up packages.
A representative at Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Amazon Flex is active in all 50 states and requires workers to be over 21-years-old, have a valid drivers license, a smart phone, a bank account and an insured mid-size or larger vehicle.
Amazon Flex drivers get paid weekly based on deliveries, with pay ranging from $18-25 per hour, depending on location and additional tips, according to the company’s website.
