Lawmakers consider allowing hospitals to administer medical cannabis
March 12, 2026
RICHMOND, Va (WVVA) – A bill moving through the Virginia General Assembly would allow hospitals to administer medical cannabis to certain patients, expanding where and how the treatment can be provided.
House Bill 75 would permit hospitals to administer medical cannabis to patients who are registered to use it under Virginia law. The change is aimed at helping patients who rely on medical cannabis continue their treatment when they are admitted to a hospital, rather than having to stop abruptly or navigate inconsistent facility policies.
The proposal comes as Virginia continues to adjust its medical cannabis program and clarify rules for patients, providers and health care facilities.
The bill’s next steps depend on action in the General Assembly and whether it is signed into law by the governor.
