Renewable Energy Looks Stronger as Europe Rethinks Fossil Fuel Dependence

March 21, 2026

Europe did not need another warning about the cost of fossil fuels, but it just got one. After U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran rattled global energy markets, leaders across the European Union started making a point that now feels hard to ignore. The fastest path to lower bills, stronger energy security, and a safer environment is more homegrown clean power.

According to Politico’s Zia Weise, the latest shock has pushed countries from Spain to Poland to call for a quicker shift away from imported oil and gas. That matters because Europe still pays a steep price when conflict hits major fuel routes. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc had already spent an extra €6 billion on fossil fuel imports after the recent escalation.

The deeper lesson is simple. Dependence is expensive. When nations rely on fuel they do not control, families and businesses get exposed to every war, blockade, and supply scare. By contrast, wind, solar, better grids, and electrification can keep more energy at home. They can also make prices less vulnerable to panic.

There is already evidence this works. An Ember analysis found that Spain’s growing wind and solar system has sharply reduced the role of gas in setting electricity prices. That has helped shield consumers more than in gas heavy countries like Italy. That is not just smart economics. It is also better for the planet, public health, and long term stability.

Of course, renewables alone will not fix everything overnight. Still, this moment shows why climate action is also a security strategy. Europe can either keep paying for imported volatility or build a cleaner system that is harder to shake. Choosing clean electricity, efficient homes, and even more plant based lifestyles is one way to back a calmer future. Keep pushing for choices that protect the Earth, cut Pollution, and Support a more vegan world.
