The Woodlands misses out on Tesla tunnels plan but keeps traffic push moving
March 24, 2026
The Woodlands won’t see a tunnel for Tesla vehicles under Town Center any time soon, but township officials aren’t giving up on addressing increasing traffic in the community.
In February, the township board unanimously approved a letter of support and a proposal for a tunnel as part of Elon Musk’s Boring Co. Tunnel Vision Challenge. The township proposed a tunnel that would connect Waterway Square, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and Town Green Park.

The township’s proposed “Waterway Loop” would consist of two parallel tunnels, 12 feet in diameter, through which a fleet of Tesla vehicles would move people from point to point.
However, on Monday, the Boring Company announced the winners on X, formerly Twitter, as the NOLA Loop in New Orleans, the Ravens Loop in Baltimore and the University Hills Loop in Dallas.
“While we are naturally disappointed that The Woodlands was not selected, we are proud to have been part of a forward thinking conversation about the future of transportation,” Township Chairman Brad Bailey told the Chronicle.
In a Facebook statement, township officials said they see an opportunity.
“While not selected, this process provided an opportunity to contribute to a broader conversation about the future of transportation and to showcase the planning and vision that define The Woodlands,” the statement read. “The Woodlands remains focused on identifying solutions that support mobility and quality of life, with a continued commitment to evaluating ideas that serve residents now and into the future.”
Bailey said the board is “constantly evaluating the needs of the Town Center, especially during major events.”
“We will continue to work with Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ritch Wheeler and other stakeholders in exploring solutions that can help improve mobility, including parking strategies, microtransit options, and other innovative approaches,” Bailey said.
Earlier this year, The Boring Co. asked communities to submit a project for consideration in the Tunnel Vision Challenge. The company will build 1 mile of tunnel for free. The zero-emission tunnel system will be designed to reduce vehicle and pedestrian traffic on surface streets during times of high demand.
The Boring Co. in 2021 began operating a tunnel transit system in Las Vegas. The Convention Center Loop and its connectors have eight stations and have transported 3 million people, according to the company. It says there are plans to expand the system to 68 miles with 104 stations.
