NHTSA Expands Tesla Full Self-Driving Probe to 3.2 Million Vehicles

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recently broadened its examination of Tesla‘s full self-driving technology. The agency initially began a preliminary evaluation of the software in October 2024, focusing on 2.4 million vehicles. The probe has now been expanded to include 3.2 million vehicles.

The safety regulator is concerned the system might not properly detect obstacles or alert drivers under conditions of poor visibility. It has reviewed several crashes where the software reportedly lost track of or failed to identify a vehicle ahead.

This investigation touches a core element supporting Tesla’s market valuation, which is above one trillion dollars. A significant portion of that valuation is attributed to the company’s investments and potential in the robotaxi sector, a market some analysts believe could reach immense global scale. However, Tesla currently derives a minimal fraction of its revenue from this developing business.

The company’s recent automotive sales performance has slowed, with deliveries declining in 2025 compared to the previous year. This marks its first annual sales decrease. The robotaxi opportunity is seen as a primary factor for its high valuation despite this sales trend.

Analysts note that while the regulatory inquiry may not stop Tesla’s robotaxi ambitions, it could potentially delay their introduction and affect early market positioning. One research firm characterized the investigation as having reached an advanced stage of technical scrutiny.
