CAIRO – 8 April 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi directed well-planned expansion in new and renewable energy projects while reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels during a meeting with Cabinet officials on Wednesday.

The president instructed continued efforts to create a balanced energy mix that reflects Egypt’s ambition to become a leading regional hub for green energy.

El-Sisi also directed continued cooperation between the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Finance to accelerate the introduction of additional clean energy capacities and secure the necessary funding.

The goal is to ensure the stability of the national grid and optimize the use of available resources to meet the country’s development needs, the president added.

The president also reviewed measures being taken to address the repercussions of regional developments, particularly those related to securing electricity supply and ensuring the continuous availability of power for all uses.

He checked on measures focused on improving energy efficiency in the industrial sector and implementing the summer action plan including preparations for increased demand and higher consumption levels during hot weather.

Renewable Capacity Expansion

Moreover, the meeting reviewed the status of new and renewable energy projects.

These initiatives include the targeted additional capacities from wind and solar power, as well as battery storage systems for the national electricity grid, in line with the Egypt Energy Strategy 2030.

The review also covered both the additional capacities that have been contracted and those currently under contract, ensuring the reinforcement of the national electricity grid’s stability and meeting the country’s growing energy demand.

2026 Renewable Energy Targets

Attending the meeting, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat highlighted that 2026 will see the addition of 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy connected to the unified national grid.

He added that this addition would enhance the sustainability and stability of Egypt’s electricity system.

Essmat also emphasized ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of power generation units, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and achieve a balanced energy mix.

He stressed focus on reviewing the energy strategy to ensure renewable sources meet at least 42% of Egypt’s energy needs by 2030 at the latest.

Meanwhile, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawy reviewed efforts to settle outstanding payments to companies operating in Egypt, in line with the president’s directives to clear all arrears before the end of June 2026.

Badawy also highlighted recent discoveries and added reserves of oil and gas, as well as the exploratory and development drilling plan for 2026, alongside initiatives to rationalize and reduce consumption of petroleum products and natural gas.
