Anthropic has kept the model out of public release, instead limiting access to select technology partners under controlled conditions.

Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun has dismissed the growing concerns surrounding Anthropic’s newly discussed AI model, Claude Mythos Preview, describing the reactions as exaggerated and unnecessary “drama.”

The controversy began after Anthropic claimed that Mythos is capable of identifying large numbers of high-severity vulnerabilities across widely used operating systems and software platforms. The company has kept the model out of public release, instead limiting access to select technology partners under controlled conditions.

These claims have sparked debate across the tech and cybersecurity communities, with some experts warning about potential misuse risks, while others argue that the reaction is overstated.

LeCun strongly sided with the skeptical camp. Responding on social media, he rejected the hype around the model, suggesting that the alarm being raised does not match the actual capabilities being demonstrated. He also implied that similar results could likely be achieved using smaller, more efficient AI systems, challenging the idea that Mythos represents a major breakthrough.

His remarks add to a broader split in the AI community. While some researchers view Mythos as an incremental improvement being amplified by marketing, others working in cybersecurity say AI-assisted tools are already significantly improving vulnerability detection and reducing the time required for analysis.

The disagreement highlights an ongoing divide in the industry over how to interpret rapid advances in AI: whether they represent transformative leaps forward or overhyped iterations of existing technology.

As discussions continue, Mythos has become a focal point in the larger debate over AI safety, capability, and how much of the current fear reflects real technical risk versus industry positioning.
