Ford Mustang Mach-E Ranks Among Fastest Depreciating Vehicles in New Study

April 13, 2026

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is among the vehicles losing value the fastest, according to a recent analysis of depreciation trends across the automotive market.

Data compiled from more than 950,000 five-year-old used vehicle sales between March 2025 and February 2026 shows the all-electric crossover ranks eighth among models with the highest depreciation rates. On average, the Mach-E sheds $22,976 in value over five years, representing a 60.8 percent drop from its original price.

The findings reflect a broader trend affecting electric vehicles, which continue to depreciate more quickly than other segments. In the same study, EVs recorded an average five-year depreciation rate of 57.2 percent, significantly higher than the 35.4 percent seen in hybrid models. Concerns surrounding long-term battery performance and replacement costs are often cited as contributing factors, even as real-world data suggests those concerns may be overstated.

The Mach-E is not alone in experiencing steep value declines. Several other electric models rank even higher on the list, including the Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen ID.4. Luxury vehicles also feature prominently among the worst performers, with models such as the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, BMW 7 Series and Land Rover Range Rover showing similar depreciation patterns.

Despite these declines, overall depreciation rates have improved slightly compared to previous years. The study found that average five-year depreciation dropped to 41.8 percent in 2026, a 3.7 percent improvement from the prior year. This shift suggests changing dynamics in the used vehicle market, where demand has strengthened amid rising new vehicle prices and shifting consumer confidence.

Even with these improvements, electric vehicles remain the weakest performers in terms of value retention, trailing the broader market by a notable margin. Meanwhile, trucks and hybrid vehicles continue to hold their value more effectively, standing out as the most stable segments.

The results highlight a growing divide in how different vehicle types perform over time, with electric models like the Mustang Mach-E facing steeper losses despite their technological advancements and increasing presence in the market.
