Amazon and Walmart Stocks Outperform S&P 500 in 2026

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, Amazon and Walmart are the world’s two largest retailers. Their stocks have both exceeded the performance of the S&P 500 index so far this year.

Amazon is the dominant online retailer, while Walmart leads in physical store retail. The comparison of their financial trajectories reveals distinct differences.

Revenue growth favors Amazon

Amazon has demonstrated a higher compound annual growth rate in revenue over the last three years. Its growth rate in that period was more than double that of Walmart. Amazon also maintained higher growth rates across longer time frames of five, ten, fifteen, and twenty years. The pace of revenue expansion has quickened for both corporations over the past five years.

This pattern indicates Amazon has been capturing market share more rapidly, a dynamic that persisted into the latest reporting period. Amazon’s fourth-quarter revenue increased by fourteen percent compared to the same quarter the previous year. Its cloud computing and online advertising divisions each grew by over twenty percent. The company’s custom artificial intelligence chips now generate annual revenue exceeding ten billion dollars.

In its fiscal fourth quarter ending in late January, Walmart posted year-over-year revenue growth of 5.6 percent. Despite strong growth in its digital commerce and advertising operations, the vast majority of Walmart’s sales still originate from its physical stores. Amazon’s financial performance reflects a more diversified business model developed over time.

Profitability and valuation metrics examined

Amazon’s superior revenue growth is accompanied by better profit margins than Walmart’s. Although Walmart has successfully enhanced its margins through digital initiatives, they remain below Amazon’s levels.

Furthermore, Amazon currently possesses a more attractive valuation based on its price-to-earnings ratio, which is lower than Walmart’s. This lower valuation exists alongside Amazon’s faster expansion in both revenue and net income, as well as a greater number of long-term growth catalysts.
