Amid Meta layoffs, Zuckerberg’s ‘beach water person’ hiring sparks online buzz
May 20, 2026
Even as thousands of employees at Meta awaited layoff notices this week, a job posting linked to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg drew widespread attention online for its unusual title and timing.
The role, described as a beach water person, has been advertised through West 10, the Zuckerberg family office, and is based at the family’s estate in Kauai, Hawaii. The listing has gained traction online for what many observers see as an unusually phrased description of a familiar job.
According to Firstpost, the responsibilities outlined in the posting include beach and pool lifeguarding along with overseeing general water safety, indicating that the role is effectively that of a lifeguard, though described differently.
The job description also includes additional duties such as working as a boat deckhand and assisting guests with activities including stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing and snorkelling around the property.
The listing was first highlighted by Wired and quickly went viral, with users pointing out that most of the responsibilities align with existing roles typically described as lifeguard, beach attendant or water safety officer. The unusual phrasing has since become a point of discussion across social media platforms, with many noting that the title appears to have little precedent in common usage.
The timing of the listing has further amplified reactions, coming alongside a fresh round of layoffs at Meta that reportedly affects close to 8,000 employees globally.
The job cuts are part of Mark Zuckerberg’s broader effort to restructure the company with a stronger focus on artificial intelligence, while reducing operational costs and simplifying organisational layers. Teams aligned with AI initiatives continue to expand even as other departments face reductions.
According to Bloomberg and The Business Times, employees in Singapore were among the first to receive layoff notifications, with some reports indicating that emails were sent at around 4 am local time. Additional layoffs across the United States and Europe are expected to follow in line with regional time zones.
The restructuring has raised concerns internally as Meta continues to invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, products and research.
A day after the layoffs began, Zuckerberg sought to reassure employees in an internal memo reported by Reuters, stating that the company does not currently anticipate further company-wide layoffs this year and acknowledging concerns around communication during earlier restructuring phases.
However, the juxtaposition of widespread job cuts and the hiring of a beach water person has continued to draw attention online, underscoring the stark contrast between corporate restructuring and the personal staffing needs of one of the world’s wealthiest technology executives.
