A giant, ‘first of its kind’ Amazon retail store is planned for a Chicago suburb

Amazon confirmed the building is under contract, and that they’re hoping to break ground in 2027.

A massive new Amazon grocery and retail store could soon come to southwest Chicago suburb.

A Jan. 12 post from the Village of Orland Park described the proposed project, at the corner of 159th St. and LaGrange Road, as a “first of its kind” Amazon retail store. The 35-acre site would be redeveloped after demolishing a former Petey’s II restaurant, the plan said.

The 225,000 square-foot store would offer a “wide selection of products” ranging from groceries to general merchandise, according to the company. It also could include onsite dining options.

The store would also give online shoppers the opportunity to buy online and pick-up in store. It would include more than 800 parking spaces and seven truck docks, the plan showed.

It will “not be an Amazon warehouse or distribution center,” the village stressed.

The proposed plan comes with a number of traffic changes and updates, including widening of some streets, additional traffic lights and more.

“When a global retailer of this scale is considering investment in Orland Park, it sends a strong signal about the vitality of our community and the strategic importance of this corridor,” Orland Park Mayor Jim Dodge said when the plan was announced. “It demonstrates that Orland Park continues to be viewed as a premier destination for major commercial investment.”

During a Village of Orland Park Plan Commission meeting earlier this month, some residents spoke out against the development, saying they did not want the development because of conservation and transportation issues it would bring to the area.

One resident said adding the facility would “bottleneck” traffic in the area, and another stressed how Orland Park could be left with costly challenges if it needs to repurpose and reforest the area in the future.

“How is my life going to be better?” one resident asked at the meeting. Another said, “a development of this magnitude must enhance community, not detract from it.”

Amazon confirmed the building is under contract, and that they’re hoping to break ground in 2027. The project will be on the Committee of the Whole and Board of Trustees agenda Jan. 19, the village said.
