A laser cannon powered by AI: the radical invention against tiger mosquitoes – Futura-Sciences

The Return of the Tiger Mosquito: A Modern Plague
They’re back! Mosquitoes, especially their notorious relative the Aedes albopictus, also known as the tiger mosquito, have already made their return—and summer isn’t even here yet. Sure, there are all sorts of anti-mosquito products available, some with limited effectiveness. There are systems that work well at night, but these are useless against tiger mosquitoes, which have the audacity to bite mainly during the day—most often in the morning and evening. And yes, mosquito nets still have their place. But now, there’s also the mosquito laser cannon.
A Threat Spread by Climate Change
“For a long time confined to tropical regions, chikungunya could soon become a permanent fixture in northern countries, especially in Europe. Driven by the meteoric spread of the tiger mosquito and accelerated by global warming, the virus is now raising concerns among scientists, who are warning of an increasing risk of local epidemics in temperate regions.”
This unsettling scenario has experts sounding the alarm. The relentless march of the tiger mosquito, fueled by climate change, means that once-exotic viruses like chikungunya are knocking, quite literally, at Europe’s door.
The DIY Revolution: How Does the Laser Cannon Work?
This device is nothing if not inventive—a truly DIY creation. The setup combines:
- A rolling chassis for mobility
- A DSLR camera with a zoom lens for accurate spotting
- An electronic module with integrated AI
- A dedicated module for aiming and firing the laser
Once the AI is trained to recognize these tiny targets, the system springs into action autonomously. It detects, identifies, and eliminates only mosquitoes, thanks to precision laser shots.
A recent video shows the version 2.0 of the AI laser mosquito defense system: it can now detect, identify, track, and eliminate mosquitoes in real time, combining computer vision with thermal imaging. The latest upgrades? Harmonic drives, servo motors, and a reinforced aluminum gimbal—because apparently mosquitoes are tougher than you think!
Safety First: No Unwanted Casualties
Let’s clear up a common worry: unlike some Chinese-made devices that can’t get certified because they’re a hazard to human and animal eyes, Steven Cheng’s project takes safety several steps further. There’s a second wide-angle security camera dedicated to environmental surveillance. If this camera detects people, pets, or flammable materials in the path of the mosquito, the laser is blocked and won’t fire. Don’t worry—your cat (and your eyebrows) are safe.
Mosquitoes: More Than Just a Nuisance?
“Its buzz is unbearable. Its bite makes you itch. Worse, it can infect us with a disease. Sometimes a serious one. The mosquito. It’s hard to find a reason to love them. Still, they do play an important role in nature.”
Mosquitoes may drive us mad, but like every creature, they do serve a function in the natural ecosystem—even if, when you’re scratching your ankle for the third time this week, it’s tough to be grateful.
From Homebrew to Market?
For now, this is still very much a 100% DIY project—but thanks to its careful approach to shot safety, many would hope to see this kind of tool available for purchase soon, especially given the times we’re living in!
