A Risk to Our Future

April 17, 2025

Climate change is a serious problem affecting us all. Experts define it as a long-term shift in weather patterns, but its impacts are already evident. It has disrupted natural systems, leading to numerous challenges.

The floods of 2022 serve as a stark example. They devastated upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and lower regions like Balochistan. Thousands lost their lives, homes, crops, and infrastructure in what was a period of immense destruction.

Temperatures are rising to unprecedented levels, making summers increasingly unbearable and putting human health at risk. Droughts are becoming more frequent in some areas, while others face violent storms—as seen recently in Sibi, Lasbela, Awaran, Noshki, and beyond.

Climate change is also causing sea levels to rise—by 0.06 inches (1.4 millimetres) already—leading to the destruction of coastal habitats and displacement of wildlife. Forests near coastlines are under threat, and with them, the animals that depend on these ecosystems.

We must act quickly. Everyone can contribute—by using less plastic, turning off unnecessary lights, planting trees, and supporting sustainable practices. Above all, collaboration between citizens and the government is key. Community participation in environmental campaigns can help mitigate both man-made and natural risks.

Let us come together to save our planet—for ourselves and for future generations.

Awaran.
