March 12, 2025
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released two reports Wednesday regarding the use of cannabis while driving.
According to the reports, 85% of those surveyed said they drive the same day they consume cannabis. 53% said they consumed an hour or less before driving.
Additionally, 47% said they believe they either drive the same or even a little better (15%) or much better (19%) when cannabis is consumed.
Meanwhile, 39% said they would trust messaging cannabis use and safe driving from cannabis industry groups and cannabis brands and companies (37%).
“Understanding what motivates cannabis consumers to drive under the influence can be helpful in developing effective safety strategies,” said President & Executive Director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Dr. David Yang. “With insights on perceptions, decision-making, and behavior, we aim to inform policies and interventions that make our roads safer for everyone.”
AAA said that 44% of people who took the survey said that they consume cannabis multiple times a day and 58% said they drive daily.
Cannabis is legal in 38 states. 24 states allow recreational use and 14 states permit only medical use of cannabis.
