NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Auto club group AAA is sharing new insights from new studies analyzing how cannabis users view driving while high.

The studies were conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety to analyze cannabis consumer sentiment and reasons for driving under the influence and to use the information that may deter such behavior in the future.

Among the findings from a survey of cannabis consumers, AAA says there were a few themes which emerged. According to the results, 44.1% of those surveyed said they consume cannabis multiple times per day. 57.8% said they drive daily while 84.8% stated they drive the same day they consume cannabis. 53% said they consumed an hour or less before driving.

46.9% said they believe they drive the same, while 14.7% believed they drive a little better and 19.4% much better. AAA adds findings also show cannabis consumers trust the cannabis industry as a source of information, adding policymakers have an opportunity to team up with these groups to provide messaging on the dangers of impaired driving. AAA says marijuana does cause impairing effects that make it unsafe to drive a vehicle.
