Al Michaels has bizarre moment during 49ers-Rams ‘TNF’ game
October 3, 2025
Al Michaels was struggling to keep up on “Thursday Night Football.”
The broadcasting legend has been on the call for some of the wildest sporting events, from the Miracle on Ice during the 1980 Winter Olympics to the Malcolm Butler interception during the 2015 Super Bowl, but the 49ers’ thrilling 23-20 overtime win over Rams will not go down as a shining moment for him.
Alongside his Amazon Prime broadcast partner, Kirk Herbstreit, Michaels appeared to be confused after Mac Jones hit DeMarcus Robinson on a timing route on third-and-5 when a flag went down in the first quarter.
Michaels assumed that it would be a holding penalty given where the flag was thrown.
He must not have been listening to the referee, who clearly stated that the penalty was roughing the passer, a 15-yard penalty added to the end of the play to push the ball up to the 41-yard line.
“This one is coming back,” Michaels said, as the referee declared the actual penalty. “Hang on a second, the 49ers are going back up to the 41-yard line. Did they, by replay assist, declare that was legal? They marked him after the catch is what they did.”
It was far from his only mistake on the broadcast.
Michaels, 80, was mistaking player names, like when he called Colton McKivitz “Connor McKivitz.”
Then on the game-deciding fourth-and-1 stop by the 49ers in overtime, Michaels claimed Rams running back Kyren Williams fumbled when he had in fact just been stopped short of the first-down marker.
Michaels also postulated during the game that the Rams needed to go to a silent count at home, as the well-traveled 49ers crowd was giving quarterback Matthew Stafford fits.
The only issue with that idea was that Los Angeles often has had to use a silent count and was already doing so in this game.
Michaels is on a year-to-year contract basis with Amazon Prime, as his deal was set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, but he was renewed this year.
