Alphabet and Amazon Stocks Evaluated After Price Declines

According to a report from Yahoo Finance, two major technology stocks, Alphabet and Amazon, are being evaluated by some market participants following a period of share price weakness. The stocks of these companies have retreated from their previous peaks.

Alphabet, the parent entity of Google, and Amazon are recognized as dominant global businesses. Each company operates a primary, well-known consumer-facing operation alongside a significant cloud computing division.

Alphabet’s core advertising business has performed strongly over the past year. Amazon’s commerce platform and Prime membership are widely used in the United States. However, the cloud segments of both firms are highlighted as key investment rationales.

Amazon Web Services is described as a critical profit driver for its parent company. In the fourth quarter, it contributed a substantial portion of Amazon’s total operating profit. During the third quarter, that portion was even higher. AWS was also the fastest-growing segment for Amazon in the fourth quarter, with its growth rate reaching the highest level in over three years. Demand related to artificial intelligence is noted as a factor beginning to increase the growth of AWS.

For Alphabet, Google Cloud is a major source of expansion, though it is less critical to overall margins than AWS is to Amazon. Google Cloud’s revenue increased significantly year-over-year in the fourth quarter and achieved a strong operating margin. The ongoing deployment of additional AI capacity is expected to potentially sustain this high growth trajectory.
