Amarillo Parks and Recreation to giveaway 800 trees to strengthen environment

April 10, 2025

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) will give away 800 trees Friday to celebrate National Arbor Day.

The department is encouraging the community to pick out a tree to help improve the ecosystem of Amarillo.

“In April it’s National Arbor Day, and we just encourage individuals to get out and plant a tree somewhere, do something that they can help the environment in any way they can,” said Cindy Perez, coordinator of beautification of public arts at PARD.

400 Scotch pine trees and 400 coffee trees will be up for grabs tomorrow at noon at the Rick Klein Sports Complex.

Two trees will be given per car with instructions on fertilization and watering.

The donations of the trees come from Shawn Palmer with K&R Tree Farm.

“First of all, trees are somewhat, can be somewhat costly, and so not everyone can afford to get a tree of their own, and so we are lucky we are able to provide that for them and we just really want people to come visit us tomorrow and pick up their tree,” said Perez.

Trees are encouraged to be placed at homesteads, backyards and open areas.

Parks and Rec staff say they want to bring the community one step closer to helping the environment.
