County commissioners react to Amazon’s $15 billion data center investment

Amazon said that it will add 1,100 new jobs and 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity to the region (WSBT File).

(WSBT) — More data centers could soon be coming to our area.

Amazon announced on Monday its plans to invest $15 billion in Northern Indiana to build additional data centers, in addition to the one already under construction near New Carlisle.

Amazon said that it will add 1,100 new jobs and 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity to the region.

But the main question is: Where is Amazon looking to build?

La Porte County Commissioner Joe Haney told WSBT22 that they haven’t received any official offers or have heard any communication from Amazon, but says he isn’t opposed to the opportunity if they were to reach out.

Our industrial park would be probably the best place in LaPorte County for one, if one was to happen. But no petitions or anything have been filed here in LaPorte County. I also don’t want to be closed off to anything. And theoretically, with the right guardrails and protections in place, the right requirements set up, and the exact right location, you know, this could be a wonderful home for them,” said Joe Haney, La Porte County Commissioner.

As part of the $15 billion investment, Amazon also announced a new “first of its kind” energy agreement with NIPSCO that they say will benefit customers and strengthen the state’s electric grid.

Governor Mike Braun issued a statement saying in part:

This is a massive win for Hoosier ratepayers. This agreement will ensure a surplus in new energy development that will deliver real savings to Hoosier ratepayers.

WSBT22 also spoke with Elkhart County Commissioner Suzy Weirick, who says she hasn’t heard anything about Amazon wanting to develop in their area, but says that whoever gets the data center would be very lucky — calling it a great economic development.

But before they actually break ground, you know, there would have to be some sort of notification or process to go through and as far as it recently is today, we haven’t had any notifications, you know, at a county-wide level or any of our offices yet,” said Haney.

WSBT22 also heard from the Executive Director of St. Joseph County Economic Development, who said Amazon has not reached out to the county about building more data centers.
