Amazon buys $20M warehouse site in Enfield, Conn.

ENFIELD, Conn. — Online retailer Amazon bought 181 acres last week at 35 Bacon Rd., Enfield for $20 million, according to a deed filed last week with the town.

The seller, Winstanley Enterprises of Concord, Massachusetts, got approval — despite neighborhood concerns — for an 819,000-square-foot, build-to-suit warehouse at the site, said Aaron Marcovitch, director of economic and community development for the town of Enfield.

The sale was first reported by the Hartford Business Journal.

Amazon confirmed the purchase in an emailed response Wednesday. Mike Murphy, Amazon regional PR manager for New England, said plans for Enfield are in the early stages and the company will share updates when it can.

The site is to the rear of Hallmark’s offices and greeting card warehouses which Winstanley has redeveloped to house multiple tenants. The entire site is just a few hundred yards south of the state line and East Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

“My understanding is that they (Amazon) are coming in with something smaller,” Marcovitch said. “These are interesting projects that cause people a lot of questions.”

Traffic is chief among those concerns, he said. The property sits midway between Hartford and Springfield, two miles from the nearest Interstate 91 exit, and is about a 20-minute drive from Bradley International Airport.

Marcovitch has yet to see formal plans.

Winstanley also owns the soon-to-be vacated Lego headquarters nearby.

Amazon has a $5.6 million distribution center at 161 Lower Westfield Rd. in Holyoke, which opened in 2019 along with 16 locations in Connecticut including a fulfillment center in Windsor.

The town once pitched the Enfield Square mall location as a possible site for Amazon’s East Coast headquarters back in 2017 when Amazon announced a contest of sorts.

The Enfield Square Mall property is expected to go through its own redevelopment this summer.

Hallmark closed its distribution center and offices in Enfield in 2015 at the cost of 570 jobs.
