Amazon Challenges Nvidia with Custom AI Chips in 2026
April 26, 2026
Apr 27, 2026
Nvidia remains a leading investment choice in artificial intelligence since 2023, with its graphics processing units serving as the standard chip for most major AI cloud providers. However, alternative chip designers are emerging that tailor their products for specific tasks, offering advantages over general-purpose GPUs. Broadcom is the most prominent in that category, but Amazon is another contender investors should monitor.
Amazon Web Services and its custom-designed chips are gaining traction in AI computing. Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy, in a shareholder letter, drew a parallel to the company’s earlier success with its Graviton CPU, which competed with Intel. Amazon now reports that 98% of its large clients use the custom-designed Graviton processors. Jassy anticipates a similar shift in the GPU space, noting that Amazon’s Trainium chips deliver better cost-performance than GPU-based training. The current generation of Trainium offers approximately a 30% improvement over GPU-based training, and upcoming generations—whose computing capacity is already fully reserved—are expected to show further gains.
While Amazon is actively pursuing Nvidia‘s market share, it also states a commitment to remain the best platform for utilizing Nvidia chips. This dual role as both competitor and partner may provide some reassurance to Nvidia investors, though some may consider buying Amazon shares in case Amazon successfully moves most of its customers to its own chips.
Amazon also presents a solid investment case beyond e-commerce. In the fourth quarter, AWS generated 50% of Amazon’s operating profits; in the third quarter, that figure was 66%. Given that AWS contributes the majority of profits, it is a key area to watch.
