Amazon is ending this controversial payment method in coming months

February 2, 2026

Amazon has announced plans to end its controversial payment method, Amazon One — a biometric palm payment option, nearly six years after its debut.

The payment method launched in September 2020, pitched as “a fast, convenient, contactless way for people to use their palm to make everyday activities like paying at a store,” more effortless.

While the method allowed customers to use their palm as a wallet, Amazon said it will discontinue the service on June 3, 2026.

Many privacy and data tech experts warn that biometric payment systems like Amazon One raise concerns because they store sensitive biometric data in the cloud, which, unlike credit cards or passwords, cannot be changed if compromised.

The company states that all customer palm data associated with the service, including biometric identifiers, will be automatically deleted after the shutdown.

Amazon did not cite a specific reason for ending the service but noted that the shutdown is limited to retail use cases.

The payment form was accepted at Amazon Go convenience stores, Amazon Fresh stores and more than 200 U.S. Whole Foods Markets.
