Amazon just pulled the plug on this popular free service

September 23, 2025

Viewers are still adjusting to the switch after Amazon earlier this month discontinued its popular free streaming service, fulfilling an announcement made earlier this summer.

The Freevee app now redirects users to a website where they can download Prime Video, Amazon’s main streaming platform. Users can access former Freevee content through Prime Video without needing a paid membership.

This means that popular shows like “Jury Duty,” “Judy Justice,” and “Bosch: Legacy” remain available at no cost to viewers, according to Amazon.

Freevee launched in 2019 under Amazon’s IMDb website and offered free, ad-supported programming including TV shows, movies, original content, and select Amazon Prime material.

How popular was the service? It reached an estimated 65 million monthly users at its peak.

This month’s shutdown consolidates Amazon’s streaming offerings under the Prime Video umbrella while maintaining free access to Freevee’s content library. Users will continue to view advertisements during programming, as was the case with the original Freevee service.
