ATLANTA — Amazon this week announced it was laying off 16,000 workers in a moved aimed at “removing bureaucracy.”

A blog post by the company on Tuesday announced the job reductions; it did not state specifically which roles were being eliminated or where. According to CNBC, the layoffs are targeting  corporate jobs.

It was unclear if the layoffs would impact Amazon’s sizable metro Atlanta and Georgia statewide workforce, which numbers about 34,000. The company maintains a Georgia corporate office in Buckhead.

According to the blog post, US-based employees being laid off will get 90 days to look for a new internal role; for those unable to obtain one, there will be “transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits (as applicable) and more.”

The latest workforce announcement comes ahead of Amazon’s 2025 fourth-quarter earnings call, which will be held on February 5. That call could reveal further details about the corporate strategy and where layoffs are being concentrated.
