Amazon Prime changing delivery nationwide: What to know

June 27, 2025

Amazon is expanding same-day and next-day delivery to more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural communities by the end of the year, the mega online retailer announced this week.

“Everybody loves fast delivery. So, whether you live in Monmouth, Iowa or in downtown Los Angeles, now you’re going to have the same fantastic Amazon customer experience: the ability to get the wide variety of items you need to keep your household running every day, delivered the same or next day,” Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said in a statement.

Move triples size of Amazon’s delivery network

The expansion – expected to roughly triple the size of Amazon’s delivery network – will cost some $4 billion. The investment, the company said, will “transform daily life for rural customers, who typically live farther from brick-and-mortar retailers, have fewer product and brand choices, and face limited delivery options when shopping online.”

Amazon hasn’t announced which areas will be included in the expansion. Prime members can check whether your area qualifies for Same-Day Delivery here and browsing by category, price point and retail store. Customers can also look for “free delivery today” next to product names.

The company continues to expand its same and next-day delivery results. So far in 2025, Amazon said the number of items delivered same or next-day increased by more than 30% over the same time last year.

How much does Amazon Prime cost?

Amazon Prime cost $14.99 a month or $139 a year.

Amazon Prime Day growing

The announcement comes as Amazon prepares for one of its biggest sales events of the year, expanding the event to four days. Amazon Prime Day is July 8-11 with deals on pantry staples, home items, beauty products, back-to-school supplies, health and personal care finds, family-favorite toys, best-selling books, pet essentials and even premium and luxury splurges among many other deals.
