Amazon Prime’s record $2.5 billion settlement: When payments will go out
December 15, 2025
There’s a good chance Christmas could come early this year for some folks.
Specifially, those who are part of an Amazon Prime settlement. Up to 35 million Amazon Prime members, in fact, might have some dough on the way.
Those eligible Prime members who were lucky enough to get in are set to receive checks from a $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission.
The settlement is over the FTC accusing Amazon of tricking millions of customers into signing up for Amazon Prime, then turning around and making things astronomically difficult to cancel the subscription.
Under the agreement, $1.5 billion is for consumer payments, while $1 billion is a civil penalty the FTC views as historic. Additionally, Amazon has to put an end to the enrollment and cancellation obstacles that were seen as unlawful.
“The evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime, and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription,” FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson explained in the press release. “Today, we are putting billions of dollars back into Americans’ pockets, and making sure Amazon never does this again.”
Amazon didn’t admit to wrongdoing, saying in a statement, “Amazon and our executives have always followed the law and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating customers.”
Fast forward to now, the e-commerce giant is starting to cut checks and payout customers.
Those who are eligible and are U.S. based are set to get up to $51.
If you’re entitled to an automatic refund, you should have gotten an email from Amazon asking you to claim the payment through PayPal or Venmo, or you can choose the option to receive the payment through mail.
This is for Amazon Prime members who enrolled between June 23, 2019, through June 23, 2025, and didn’t use the Prime benefits, including services such as Prime Music or Prime Video, more than three times in a year.
For eligible members who didn’t get an automatic payment but would like to check the possibility of being owed money, there’s still a good chance you could qualify for a refund.
If so, head on over to Subscriptionmembershipsettlement.com and claim your refund.
Amazon began processing the automatic refunds on Nov. 12, with plans to continue through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.
Checks should be cashed within 60 days.
