Amazon Reportedly Plans to Cut 30,000 Corporate Jobs This Week
October 28, 2025
As reported by Reuters, citing three anonymous sources, the alleged wave of layoffs could impact several departments within Amazon, including human resources, Amazon Web Services, and operations, devices, and services.
Although those 30,000 positions make up only a small fraction of Amazon’s total workforce of more than 1.5 million, they account for nearly 10% of its 350,000 corporate employees – a reduction likely to affect operations in the short term. The sources also noted that managers of affected teams were instructed to complete training on Monday on how to communicate with staff following email notifications about the layoffs set to be sent out Tuesday morning.
While the sources did not provide a specific reason for the layoffs, Reuters notes that back in June 2025, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy discussed the company’s growing adoption of generative AI and how they would need “fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” pointing to artificial intelligence as the most likely culprit behind the mass cuts.
With the report emerging just weeks after the mass AWS crash, a connection between the two cannot be ruled out, though it has also not been confirmed, as an Amazon spokesperson declined to comment to Reuters. At the moment, the tech giant itself hasn’t made any announcements about potential layoffs, and since this report is the sole source, it’s wise to take it with a grain of salt until there’s either an official statement or multiple LinkedIn posts from impacted Amazon staff.
Previously, there was a report that Amazon Web Services was planning to fire 40% of its DevOps team to replace them with AI, which surfaced online just days before the aforementioned AWS outage. While many reasonably viewed that report with skepticism, the connection between Amazon, layoffs, and AI in both stories is hard to ignore, and with Amazon refusing to comment, it seems the only option we have left is to wait and see.
