Amazon (AMZN, Financials) is making its biggest bet yet on the Netherlands, setting aside 1.4 billionabout $1.63 billionto grow its operations there over the next three years.

The company said the money will go toward improving logistics and expanding support for Dutch sellers who use Amazon’s marketplace. It’s also planning to build new tools powered by artificial intelligence to help local entrepreneurs manage and market their businesses online.

The Netherlands is an important growth market for us, said Eva Faict, Amazon’s head for Belgium and the Netherlands. She told Dutch newspaper FD that part of the new investment will fund AI development tailored to sellers on the platform.

Amazon has about 1,000 workers in the Netherlands right now, but Bol.com, the online store owned by Ahold Delhaize, is still ahead of them in the market. The point of the investment is to close that gap and enable Amazon reach more customers in mainland Europe.
