Amazon To Share Plans For Gage Park’s Central Steel & Wire Plant At Community Meeting
February 16, 2026
GAGE PARK — Neighbors can learn about Amazon’s plans to turn a massive Southwest Side plant into one of the company’s delivery stations at a community meeting Tuesday night.
The company will share its plans for the Central Steel & Wire Plant, 3000 W. 51st St., at a meeting taking place 6-7:30 p.m. at Las Brisas del Mar, 3207 W. 51st St., according to a notice from Ald. Jeylú Gutiérrez’s (14th) ward office.
Amazon will share its proposal for the 70-acre site, which it plans to redevelop and turn into a delivery station, the last step in the company’s fulfillment process, according to the company.
“Our plan to redevelop this property and open a delivery station is rooted in providing fast delivery and great service to customers on the southwest side of Chicago,” said Amazon spokesperson Amber Plunkett in an emailed statement.
The facility will support a fleet of electric delivery vehicles, and the company plans to enhance the property with landscaping and other improvements, Plunkett said. Amazon will share information at the meeting about its operations, jobs and how it supports the communities where it operates, Plunkett said.
Amazon bought the property in 2021 from Central Steel & Wire, Cook County records show. At the time, the company said it would turn it into an Amazon delivery station, with construction anticipated to start in 2023, according to the Sun-Times.
Sites like this employ 100 to 200 full-time employees and nearly 400 employees hired by the company’s delivery service partners, Plunkett said.
Amazon operates another delivery station at a leased warehouse, 3507 W. 51st Street, where workers previously held demonstrations demanding better wages and work rules, the Sun-Times reported.
