Amazon warehouse opponents aim to comment at DRB meeting

ESSEX, Vt. (WCAX) – More people are pushing back against Amazon’s plans to build a warehouse facility in Vermont.
The Essex Development Review Board is meeting Thursday night, and even though the Amazon proposal isn’t on the agenda, it didn’t stop opponents from turning out.
The proposal announced last month calls for a 107,000-square-foot facility to be built on 23 acres off Kimo Drive, near Saxon Hill Road, a part of Essex Town that has a mix of residential and industrial development.
Residents hoping to comment at the DRB meeting say they’re worried about traffic and the footprint of the warehouse in their backyard.
“I want to let people know this is happening and I want the people who live here to have public comment to the Development Review Board. I want them to listen, to hear what neighbors have to say,” said Katie Desanto, a local business owner.
“I don’t think we need it to be faster — Amazon comes really fast from other places. If you really need something, it doesn’t need to be faster, and we have really incredible local businesses that do supply really incredible things we source from here,” said Maia Gilmour of Montpelier.
Amazon has said the facility would help folks in the region get their orders faster.
A DRB meeting on the facility planned for next month has been moved to the high school to accommodate larger crowds.
